Description
Environmental Engineering and Climate Change
Environmental engineering is crucial in any adaptation effort to climate change by trying to find solutions that circumvent or reduce its impacts on people, ecosystems, and/ or infrastructure. This presentation discusses some of the recent trends of how environmental engineering practitioners integrate new knowledge and work to address uncertainty while developing, testing, and implementing appropriate solutions.
Presented By

Haitham Elnakar
Project Manager / Environmental Specialist
Dr. Haitham Elnakar has a Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering from the University of Alberta, Canada (2018). He conducted research as a postdoctoral fellow and taught courses as an instructor at the University of Calgary, Canada; and consulted for the Royal Military College of Canada through Calian. Dr. Elnakar has been recognized by several prestigious scholarships such as the Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship and Mitacs Elevate Postdoctoral Scholarship. Dr. Elnakar’s research contributions to date emphasize a “bottom-up” approach to design development and implementation, with a strong focus on linking local characteristics with environmental engineering designs. His research and professional experience portfolio includes a wide range of niche projects such as: leading water quality/quantity and treatment projects related to both drinking water and wastewater in small/remote communities; monitoring surface water, soil, and groundwater quality within the traditional lands of indigenous people; advising on a wide range of water and environment-related challenges within military installations; researching and implementing climate change adaptation strategies; and designing compost and landfill facilities.
