FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Chamber of Commerce takes Leadership Role on “Signage” Issue
The St. Albert & District Chamber of Commerce today announced they are undertaking a three month project which will examine and prepare recommendations on the use of signage by businesses in our community.
“With our focus clearly on the economic growth and prosperity of our business community, we will be looking at models being used in other municipalities”, stated 2011 Chamber Chair, Charlene Zoltenko. “We realize that signage is an important part of the advertising mix used by many of our business members, and that other cities have found a way to reduce the unsightly clutter without harming the ability of a business to attract customers. We want to see how that’s been successfully done”, she stated.
The Chamber of Commerce, over the next three months, will explore the signage bylaws in other communities, will consult with Chamber of Commerce members, and will prepare a report that will include recommendations on how we can move forward. “This is a complex bylaw, and deserves our close study and consideration before any recommendations can be made relative to signage”, said Lynda Moffat, Chamber of Commerce President and C.E.O. “To move ahead with increasing licensing fees without first addressing the whole picture of signage use, current regulations, business consultation, and future planning, is not a step that would have been recommended or supported by our organization”, she added.
It is expected that the Signage study and recommendations will be presented to City Council prior to the end of March, 2012.
